Help Us Welcome Newly Accredited On Golden Rescue to GFAS

July 11, 2023 (Birkenfeld, OR) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to On Golden Rescue (OGR) as of July 6, 2023.

On Golden Rescue achieved GFAS Accreditation, meeting criteria for providing humane and responsible care to equines. With dedication and commitment to demonstrating high levels of professionalism, OGR has achieved GFAS Accreditation. This certification signifies that OGR meets GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed equine care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and granters to recognize On Golden Rescue as an excellent organization.

“When we first were in the process of creating OGR”, Larry Boxman, Executive Director explained, “we wanted to make sure we were providing the highest quality care in the most wholesome and safest environment possible. To turn our vision into reality, we thoroughly examined many websites and spoke with representatives from other rescues and sanctuaries and discovered an extraordinary trend. The best-of the best were all GFAS Accredited or Verified. At that point, we knew for us to be the best, the GFAS standards would be our guiding principles.” He continued, “We studied the GFAS criteria and requirements, read through the sample documents and went to work. The GFAS staff have been incredible in every way. They provided guidance, suggestions and encouragement in the most professional manner possible. Obtaining GFAS Accreditation has been our goal since the inception of OGR in early 2022 and we are extremely proud to be associated with such a prestigious organization.”

Mr Boxman went on to say, “Now that we are GFAS Accredited, we know we fall into a class that has more to prove every day, rather than less. That is, Accreditation is not justification to rest on that laurel, but to prove at all times that such recognition is warranted. Accreditation not only indicates that we have met the highest standards, it indicates our commitment to continue to meet new standards and excel in ways not yet adopted into standards. After all, these animals deserve the best!”

“On Golden Rescue was a joy to work with through the certification process.”, said Traci Hanson, GFAS Program Director – Equine, “Larry and his team were, and continue to be deeply dedicated to providing the best standard of care for the animals, and growth and transparency of the organization.”

The GFAS Equine Accreditation Program is made possible by a generous grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® and the Kenneth Scott Charitable Trust.

    About On Golden Rescue
In the rural countryside of the coastal range of Oregon, On Golden Rescue (OGR) has created a forever sanctuary and rehabilitation center for equines and goats.  Our residents come from varied situations, some from neglected or abused backgrounds, others that are simply old and compromised and no longer “of value” to the owner while others are homeless.  “No more bad days” is our credo as our residents get to live the rest of their lives in lush surroundings with top notch care and kindness. The genuine love and compassion provided by OGR to each individual resident is palpable. We have seen miracles happen in how well our rescues respond with improvements in health, behavior and happier attitudes!

Our mission is multi-faceted. Along with rescue, rehabilitate and retirement, our strategic plan also includes a community education and outreach program. By collaborating with county and state agencies, veterinarians and other non-profit organizations, OGR helps to identify situations where equines and other large animals may be in circumstances with owners where they need temporary support. Whether it be proper nutrition, farrier or veterinary care, OGR will assess and deliver needed services with the intent of the animal(s) to remain in place if it is deemed a safe and adequate. Through our Education and Outreach program, our goal is to keep animals and their people together in their current homes by helping to improve their health, safety and well-being. • New Sanctuary Standards Herald Sea Change for Captive Whales and Dolphins

New Sanctuary Standards Herald Sea Change for Captive Whales and Dolphins

June 28, 2023 – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) has published the first ever set of best practices for cetacean (whales and dolphins) sanctuaries.

These guidelines were established through the combined efforts of top cetacean experts,” said Valerie Taylor, executive director of GFAS, which is the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries. “They signal a defining moment for the future of captive cetaceans across the globe.”

Standards for sanctuaries that care for land animals – including elephants, great apes and big cats – have been in place for many years. And now, as public opinion demands an end to keeping whales and dolphins in concrete tanks for the purposes of entertainment, coastal sanctuaries are being established for their retirement.

The new guidelines are the product of a pioneering collaboration between the SEA LIFE TRUST, Merlin Entertainments, The Whale Sanctuary Project and the National Aquarium.

Like all authentic sanctuaries,” Taylor said, “these ocean havens will be ‘Cetacean Welfare First,’ meaning that the animals’ wellbeing, rather than visitor experience or company profit, will always be the priority in animal care, sanctuary design and overall operations.”

Rob Hicks, Global Director of Animal Welfare at Merlin Entertainments, has worked on the collaboration between GFAS, the Whale Sanctuary Project and National Aquarium and was one of the leading founders of the creation of the Beluga Whale Sanctuary, which is owned and run by Merlin’s partner charity the SEA LIFE TRUST.

Commenting on the partnership, Rob said: “As the team responsible for the world’s first beluga whale sanctuary, we have seen first-hand the gargantuan effort, cost and sheer amount of care and passion that these sanctuaries take to create and beyond that, to maintain. They are years in the making and need to be supported and run by a whole network of amazing and dedicated people. The SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary was initially designed for Little Grey and Little White, the two belugas who previously performed in China and were transported in 2019 to the sanctuary, which is situated off the south coast of Iceland.”

He added: “Everything we have done has always been about putting Little Grey and Little White’s welfare first and we hope that other beluga whales will join them in the future. We were delighted to support GFAS in setting out this robust framework for what other sanctuaries in the future should look like, as well as the high standards we set ourselves on the daily basis. We very much welcome these new standards and see them as just as pioneering as our own welfare project.”

Dr. Lori Marino is President and co-Founder of the Whale Sanctuary Project, which is creating a sanctuary in Nova Scotia for captive orcas and beluga whales. “Sanctuaries are one of the most important ways we can make reparations to these intelligent, beautiful animals for decades of exploitation,” she said. ” We are honored to be working with other experts and scientists who share the vision of a world in which no dolphins or whales are used for entertainment but are treated with the respect they deserve.

In 2016, John Racanelli, President and CEO of the National Aquarium, announced the aquarium’s intention to move the dolphins in its care to an oceanside sanctuary. In its endeavor to create North America’s first dolphin sanctuary, the aquarium forged relationships with other leaders in the cetacean industry, including SEA LIFE TRUST and the Whale Sanctuary Project. “As we embarked on this ground-breaking work,” he said, “we quickly determined this was about more than our dolphins alone; it concerned all captive cetaceans. So, it was imperative that we work with other experts in the field to outline the places, principles and practices that would define authentic cetacean sanctuaries. We have a duty to the animals in our care to ensure that when they move, it is to a new home designed around their social, physical and emotional needs, one that comes as close as possible to their native habitat.”

To be awarded GFAS accreditation, an organization must meet rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards that are confirmed by a site visit. They must also adhere to ethical and operational principles such as no breeding, no performances and freedom of choice for the animals. GFAS Accreditation provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors and grantors to recognize awarded groups as exceptional organizations and true sanctuaries.

And while they do have plans to grow, their eye to sustainability and a strong foundation makes this microsanctuary’s future immensely bright . “At P.E.A.C.E. we are so excited about our GFAS Accreditation, and extremely appreciative of the GFAS team for all their help, hard work, and continued support! The goal has always been to put down a strong foundation for our microsanctuary; GFAS has helped with that and more, supporting not just making sure we are following best practices with regards to the farm sanctuary’s operations, but also as an organization as a whole” says Sarien Slabbert, Executive Director at P.E.A.C.E..

We are excited to partner with the GFAS team to continue to grow and do the best for our farm sanctuary’s current and future residents, rescued individuals that come through our doors, farm sanctuaries we work with, and the public who support us.”

The people drawn to TCTC are seeking sanctuary and peace themselves, wanting only to care for and ensure optimum welfare for each horse living here. We have always cared for TCTC’s horses as part of our family. We’d developed plans and protocols establishing their security, structure and long-term management prioritizing their medical, physical, mental and emotional health FIRST. Being volunteer-powered requires substantial signage, instruction, coaching and manuals so everyone maintains the health and safety of the horses, themselves and each other. Many of our volunteers, especially our youth leaders, have little, if any, prior horse experience and they become a vital force in no time, as they have the purest intentions. Without GFAS’s incredibly detailed requirements, I would not have realized what we WERE. • Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary in England is Verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary in England is Verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

March 23, 2023 (Ascot, Berkshire, UK) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, has awarded Verified status to Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary as of March 13, 2023.

Verification means that Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary has met the criteria of a true sanctuary and is providing humane and responsible care to its animals. To become verified, an organization must meet GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit. They must also adhere to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles. The Verification status provides a clear and trusted means for the public and donors to recognize Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary as an exceptional organization.

“We are delighted to announce the Verification of Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary,” said Jackie Bennett, GFAS Program Director, Africa, and Asia. “This is a true sanctuary, dedicated to providing a safe haven, rehabilitative care, and a permanent home to primates in need, many of whom have suffered physical and psychological trauma from past lives of exploitation and neglect. Those lives are behind them now. Throughout this Verification process, Lakeview has demonstrated its commitment to meet high standards and to continue its work to strengthen and sustain its organization for now and the years to come.”

Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary, currently home to 29 primates including macaques and ring-tailed lemurs, has rescued more than 50 monkeys since its founding in 2007. These animals, arriving from the primate pet trade, laboratories, circuses, and zoos, now live within the sanctuary’s 10 wooded acres. In keeping with its belief that the animals in their care have the right to peace and tranquility and time to be with their own kind, Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary is not open to the public.

“For over 40 years we have worked with primates, and our dream and ambition during this time was to create a true sanctuary where primates could live out their remaining years, away from stress, fear, and abuse. This dream came to fruition after our search to find the ideal location was realized and the creation of our charity, founded in 2007,” said co-founders Jim and Sharon Shaw. “We have strived throughout this time to do the best for our primates and part of this process included, in 2011, becoming one of the inaugural partners in the European Alliance of Rescue Centres and Sanctuaries (EARS). We wholeheartedly support the ethos of collaboration between organisations to promote the highest welfare standards for captive animals in sanctuaries and rescue centres within Europe. By gaining GFAS verification status, it shows that we are continually striving to improve the lives of our primates, and we look forward to continuing this process for our current residents and any we may have the honour of providing a home for in the future.”

    About Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary

Monkeys and lemurs in distress are rescued, re-homed, and rehabilitated at Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary, with care, patience, and kindness. We try to help them recover from the psychological and physical trauma they have suffered over the years. Some of our primates have endured terrible suffering for over 20 years, having been deprived of their basic needs of companionship, the correct nutrition and veterinary care, leaving them needing round the clock attention. To rescue these beautiful creatures and nurse them back to physical and mental health, is our prime focus. Our mission is to:

    • Rescue: We travel the country in response to phone calls from other rescue organisations and individuals to reach monkeys in distress.
    • Re-home: Once a monkey has been rescued, he is brought back to Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary where he can live with his own kind.
    • Rehabilitate: Monkeys suffer trauma and distress as much as we humans do. To rehabilitate these wonderful creatures takes time, patience, and kindness, all found at Lakeview.

“We are thrilled to announce the Accreditation of Blackbird Ranch Farm Sanctuary” said Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director. “This organization has blown me away with both their incredible heart and expertise – a powerful combination that means the sanctuary’s residents, farmed animals typically treated as mere commodities the world over, receive some of the most compassionate and high-quality care in the world. The animals not only enjoy their beautiful surroundings on the Palouse of Washington, but also the loving care of sanctuary personnel with extensive veterinary experience: the majority of their leadership are veterinary professionals. Because of this, Blackbird Ranch offers a unique veterinary internship and volunteer program modeling an approach to veterinary medicine rooted in respect for the intrinsic value of all animals. We congratulate the entire team at Blackbird Ranch on the incredible service they are providing to animals and animal kind – they truly embody true sanctuary.”

In response to Blackbird Ranch’s accreditation, founder and Executive Director Jenna Ramsey states:

“What does it mean to be a true “sanctuary”? I’ve seen this word thrown around with many different interpretations and contexts over the years. By definition, a sanctuary, is a place of refuge and safety. We like to take the definition a bit further and define it as not only a place of refuge and safety, but a soft place to land; where the animals can thrive both physically and mentally, all while assuring they get the best care, stimulation, overall happiness, and their every need is met, to the best of our ability. True sanctuaries also do not exploit their animals for profit, breeding, recognition, exhibitory, commercial trade, etc.”

She continues, “Most of our residents, at Blackbird Ranch, have come from unhealthy, dangerous, exploitative, deplorable, and heartbreaking situations, leaving them more sensitive, fragile, and vulnerable. These animals needed a true sanctuary where they could heal inside and out; where patience is a virtue, and we don’t force them to do anything they aren’t comfortable with. We move at their pace, on their time, to facilitate healing, all while assuring their safety. This is what we strive to provide for all our rescued animals at Blackbird Ranch.

It is a great honor to become one of the few accredited farmed animal sanctuaries in North America. This is a huge deal to us, and something we’ve been working towards for a long time. GFAS accreditation is only granted to organizations who have proven themselves to be “true sanctuaries”; who have put in the work to build a trustworthy, safe, secure, organization that truly puts their animals needs first. Accreditation is assurance to us that we are in fact keeping our level of animal care to the highest standards possible. Accreditation is accountability, trust building, and transparency. We have worked hard over the past 6 years to build Blackbird Ranch from the ground up, keeping these virtues top on our priority list.

We are so grateful to be recognized among a handful of other outstanding farmed animal organizations across the globe. We will continue to work diligently, day and night, to keep our standards high and to continue to provide the level of care our residents have come to know. Thank you all for your support in helping us reach this milestone as an organization.”

About Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries
Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the sole purpose of strengthening and supporting the work of animal sanctuaries, rescues, and rehabilitation centers worldwide. The goal of GFAS in working with and assisting these animal care facilities is to ensure they are supported, honored, recognized and rewarded for meeting important criteria in providing care to the animals in residence. GFAS was founded in 2007 by animal protection leaders from a number of different organizations in response to virtually unchecked and often hidden exploitation of animals for human entertainment and financial profit. The GFAS Board of Directors guides the organization’s work in a collaborative manner. While the board includes those in top leadership at The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and American Anti-Vivisection Society, all board members serve as individuals dedicated to animal sanctuaries. www.sanctuaryfederation.org.
