The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize P.E.A.C.E. Farm Sanctuary as an exceptional organization.

“P.E.A.C.E. Farm Sanctuary’s Accreditation is a landmark moment” said Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director. “They embody the sentiment that small can be mighty. This group has been steadfastly committed to best practices from day one- not just for their 9 current residents, but for all the future residents who will pass through their doors. They are proof positive that a sanctuary does not have to be big to make an outsized impact. Beyond the value of the loving care and lives saved of their own residents, P.E.A.C.E. works extensively to provide crucial services and resources to other sanctuaries in their region, while also doing education and outreach to widen their impact for animals. And while they do have plans to grow, their eye to sustainability and a strong foundation makes this microsanctuary’s future immensely bright . You don’t have to be big to do meaningful work for animals.”

“At P.E.A.C.E. we are so excited about our GFAS Accreditation, and extremely appreciative of the GFAS team for all their help, hard work, and continued support! The goal has always been to put down a strong foundation for our microsanctuary; GFAS has helped with that and more, supporting not just making sure we are following best practices with regards to the farm sanctuary’s operations, but also as an organization as a whole” says Sarien Slabbert, Executive Director at P.E.A.C.E..

She continues, “Our mission is helping farmed animals and farm sanctuaries through resources, rescue, and education, with a vision of a compassionate world for all sentient beings, supported by ethical veganism and sustainable farm sanctuaries. We were established in 2019 as a registered Canadian charity when we saw a need for an organization that specializes in farmed animal rescue, and we’ve since evolved to include many other programs, including but not limited to the microsanctuary in 2022.

We are excited to partner with the GFAS team to continue to grow and do the best for our farm sanctuary’s current and future residents, rescued individuals that come through our doors, farm sanctuaries we work with, and the public who support us.”

“Learning about GFAS through their webinar helped me recognize and define exactly what Trillium Creek Training & Rehabilitation Coalition (TCTC) WASN’T. We are a forever SANCTUARY for the horses finding us. The people drawn to TCTC are seeking sanctuary and peace themselves, wanting only to care for and ensure optimum welfare for each horse living here. We have always cared for TCTC’s horses as part of our family. We’d developed plans and protocols establishing their security, structure and long-term management prioritizing their medical, physical, mental and emotional health FIRST. Being volunteer-powered requires substantial signage, instruction, coaching and manuals so everyone maintains the health and safety of the horses, themselves and each other. Many of our volunteers, especially our youth leaders, have little, if any, prior horse experience and they become a vital force in no time, as they have the purest intentions. Without GFAS’s incredibly detailed requirements, I would not have realized what we WERE. GFAS’s mission provided an absolute matrix for TCTC to define its, with tremendous credibility,” stated Bonnie Rhynard-Buhl, Executive Director/Founder of Trillium Creek.

  • Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary in England is Verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary in England is Verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

March 23, 2023 (Ascot, Berkshire, UK) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, has awarded Verified status to Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary as of March 13, 2023.

Verification means that Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary has met the criteria of a true sanctuary and is providing humane and responsible care to its animals. To become verified, an organization must meet GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit. They must also adhere to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles. The Verification status provides a clear and trusted means for the public and donors to recognize Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary as an exceptional organization.

“We are delighted to announce the Verification of Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary,” said Jackie Bennett, GFAS Program Director, Africa, and Asia. “This is a true sanctuary, dedicated to providing a safe haven, rehabilitative care, and a permanent home to primates in need, many of whom have suffered physical and psychological trauma from past lives of exploitation and neglect. Those lives are behind them now. Throughout this Verification process, Lakeview has demonstrated its commitment to meet high standards and to continue its work to strengthen and sustain its organization for now and the years to come.”

Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary, currently home to 29 primates including macaques and ring-tailed lemurs, has rescued more than 50 monkeys since its founding in 2007. These animals, arriving from the primate pet trade, laboratories, circuses, and zoos, now live within the sanctuary’s 10 wooded acres. In keeping with its belief that the animals in their care have the right to peace and tranquility and time to be with their own kind, Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary is not open to the public.

“For over 40 years we have worked with primates, and our dream and ambition during this time was to create a true sanctuary where primates could live out their remaining years, away from stress, fear, and abuse. This dream came to fruition after our search to find the ideal location was realized and the creation of our charity, founded in 2007,” said co-founders Jim and Sharon Shaw. “We have strived throughout this time to do the best for our primates and part of this process included, in 2011, becoming one of the inaugural partners in the European Alliance of Rescue Centres and Sanctuaries (EARS). We wholeheartedly support the ethos of collaboration between organisations to promote the highest welfare standards for captive animals in sanctuaries and rescue centres within Europe. By gaining GFAS verification status, it shows that we are continually striving to improve the lives of our primates, and we look forward to continuing this process for our current residents and any we may have the honour of providing a home for in the future.”

    About Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary

Monkeys and lemurs in distress are rescued, re-homed, and rehabilitated at Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary, with care, patience, and kindness. We try to help them recover from the psychological and physical trauma they have suffered over the years. Some of our primates have endured terrible suffering for over 20 years, having been deprived of their basic needs of companionship, the correct nutrition and veterinary care, leaving them needing round the clock attention. To rescue these beautiful creatures and nurse them back to physical and mental health, is our prime focus. Our mission is to:

    • Rescue: We travel the country in response to phone calls from other rescue organisations and individuals to reach monkeys in distress.
    • Re-home: Once a monkey has been rescued, he is brought back to Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary where he can live with his own kind.
    • Rehabilitate: Monkeys suffer trauma and distress as much as we humans do. To rehabilitate these wonderful creatures takes time, patience, and kindness, all found at Lakeview.

  • Blackbird Ranch Farm Sanctuary is Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

Blackbird Ranch Farm Sanctuary is Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

February 22, 2023 (Pullman, WA) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to Blackbird Ranch Farm Sanctuary as of January 27, 2023.

Accreditation signifies that Blackbird Ranch Farm Sanctuary meets GFAS’ rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education, outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize Blackbird Ranch Farm Sanctuary as an exceptional organization.

“We are thrilled to announce the Accreditation of Blackbird Ranch Farm Sanctuary” said Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director. “This organization has blown me away with both their incredible heart and expertise – a powerful combination that means the sanctuary’s residents, farmed animals typically treated as mere commodities the world over, receive some of the most compassionate and high-quality care in the world. The animals not only enjoy their beautiful surroundings on the Palouse of Washington, but also the loving care of sanctuary personnel with extensive veterinary experience: the majority of their leadership are veterinary professionals. Because of this, Blackbird Ranch offers a unique veterinary internship and volunteer program modeling an approach to veterinary medicine rooted in respect for the intrinsic value of all animals. We congratulate the entire team at Blackbird Ranch on the incredible service they are providing to animals and animal kind – they truly embody true sanctuary.”

In response to Blackbird Ranch’s accreditation, founder and Executive Director Jenna Ramsey states:

“What does it mean to be a true “sanctuary”? I’ve seen this word thrown around with many different interpretations and contexts over the years. By definition, a sanctuary, is a place of refuge and safety. We like to take the definition a bit further and define it as not only a place of refuge and safety, but a soft place to land; where the animals can thrive both physically and mentally, all while assuring they get the best care, stimulation, overall happiness, and their every need is met, to the best of our ability. True sanctuaries also do not exploit their animals for profit, breeding, recognition, exhibitory, commercial trade, etc.”

She continues, “Most of our residents, at Blackbird Ranch, have come from unhealthy, dangerous, exploitative, deplorable, and heartbreaking situations, leaving them more sensitive, fragile, and vulnerable. These animals needed a true sanctuary where they could heal inside and out; where patience is a virtue, and we don’t force them to do anything they aren’t comfortable with. We move at their pace, on their time, to facilitate healing, all while assuring their safety. This is what we strive to provide for all our rescued animals at Blackbird Ranch.

It is a great honor to become one of the few accredited farmed animal sanctuaries in North America. This is a huge deal to us, and something we’ve been working towards for a long time. GFAS accreditation is only granted to organizations who have proven themselves to be “true sanctuaries”; who have put in the work to build a trustworthy, safe, secure, organization that truly puts their animals needs first. Accreditation is assurance to us that we are in fact keeping our level of animal care to the highest standards possible. Accreditation is accountability, trust building, and transparency. We have worked hard over the past 6 years to build Blackbird Ranch from the ground up, keeping these virtues top on our priority list.

We are so grateful to be recognized among a handful of other outstanding farmed animal organizations across the globe. We will continue to work diligently, day and night, to keep our standards high and to continue to provide the level of care our residents have come to know. Thank you all for your support in helping us reach this milestone as an organization.”

  • Karoo Donkey Sanctury, the First Equine Sanctuary in Africa to be Awarded GFAS Verification

Karoo Donkey Sanctury, the First Equine Sanctuary in Africa to be Awarded GFAS Verification

February 10, 2023 (Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape, South Africa) – Driven by their passion to make a difference in the world of equine welfare in South Africa, the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary (KDS) transforms itself into a bonafide equine sanctuary and becomes Africa’s first equine sanctuary to be certified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Verified status to the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary as of January 31, 2023.

Certification means that KDS has met the criteria of a true animal sanctuary/rescue and is providing humane and responsible care of all the animals in their care. To become certified, an organization must meet GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit. “We are proud to announce the recent Verification of the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary, in South Africa.”, said Traci Hanson, GFAS Program Director-Equine. “KDS is doing remarkable rescue and rehabilitation work at their sanctuary in South Africa, but they are also making a huge impact in the trenches of donkey rescue elsewhere in Africa. They have succeeded in exposing the gruesome donkey skins trade to China, in ensuring the closure of Africa’s largest donkey slaughterhouse, and in helping the government to impose a ban on the trade in Tanzania, one of the former donkey skins trade hubs.”

To date the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary has provided a safe haven to over 300 donkeys and 50+ rescued horses including veterinary care, balanced nutritional diets, ample space to roam, and the freedom to live out the rest of their lives in peace and sanctuary. Not only is KDS a forever home for donkeys and horses, but the sanctuary is also an oasis to twelve other species of rescued farm animals including cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, peacocks, turkeys and geese. The sanctuary also has a small wildlife protection division that cares for seven ostriches and a zebra.

“With sheer grit and determination, my life’s mission to create a place of true shelter and sanctuary for countless previously abused and persecuted African donkeys and horses has become a magical reality and I am honored to be able to give back a small portion of what they have given me – unconditional love and spiritual enlightenment”, states Jonno Sherwin, Founder & Executive Director of Karoo Donkey Sanctuary. ”The GFAS certification process helped us to formalize our operating practices and procedures, and this certification will help prospective new donors to have greater faith in the legitimacy of our work and of our greater mission.”

December 5, 2022 (Laupahoehoe, HI) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to Magical Creatures Sanctuary as of November 16, 2022.

The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize Magical Creatures Sanctuary as an exceptional organization.

“We are delighted to announce the Accreditation of Magical Creatures Sanctuary” said Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director. “Their dedication to the residents, many of whom have special needs, is nothing short of, well, magical! As the only multi-species, nonprofit farm sanctuary operating on the Big Island, they provide a soft landing for farmed animals who would have nowhere else to turn. They have stepped up to this role with a strong philosophy of compassion – carried out in their professionalism, intern and volunteer opportunities, and powerful education work. They embody what it means to be a true sanctuary- it’s not magic – just daily dedication to excellence in all they do, for the animals’ sake.”

“Magical Creatures Sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates, and offers life-long sanctuary to animals on the Big Island of Hawaii while serving the local community with programs that promote kindness, compassion, and stewardship” states John Hubers, Managing Director at Magical Creatures.

He continues, “We are grateful for the opportunities to share the stories of our residents at Magical Creatures. We want to stop the cycle of farmed animal abuse by educating our communities and advocating for the animals every chance we get. We recruit and train local volunteers to engage with the Sanctuary’s residents and to get to know them as individuals over an extended period of time. We offer public and private tours to provide a more condensed introduction to our work and our mission.

We are very proud to have achieved GFAS Accreditation. While the process is rigorous and challenging, we greatly valued the opportunity to improve our policies and procedures and to discover new ways in which to care for our residents more thoroughly. This highly respected endorsement will let the world know that we are legitimate, professional, and fully committed to our work.”

The goal of GFAS in working with and assisting these animal care facilities is to ensure they are supported, honored, recognized and rewarded for meeting important criteria in providing care to the animals in residence. GFAS was founded in 2007 by animal protection leaders from a number of different organizations in response to virtually unchecked and often hidden exploitation of animals for human entertainment and financial profit. The GFAS Board of Directors guides the organization’s work in a collaborative manner. While the board includes those in top leadership at The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and American Anti-Vivisection Society, all board members serve as individuals dedicated to animal sanctuaries. www.sanctuaryfederation.org.

Horses & Heroes™ in Shawnee, Kansas is Verified by Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

December 1, 2022 (Shawnee, KS) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Verified status to Horses & Heroes on November 16, 2022.

Verification means that Horses & Heroes meets the criteria of a true equine sanctuary/rescue and is providing humane and responsible care of the animals. To be awarded Verified status, an organization must meet GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit, and they must also adhere to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles. The Verification status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize Horses & Heroes as an exceptional organization.

“We are proud to announce the recent Verification of Horses & Heroes,” said Daryl Tropea, Ph.D., GFAS Program Director-Equine. “Horses & Heroes’ herd of amazing equines helps people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Many of these equines have their own traumatic histories. The wellbeing of each equine during therapy is given the highest priority. Equines are not ridden but participate in ground exercises with people. In addition to providing excellent care, this organization is committed to management best practices ensuring organizational growth and sustainability.”

“GFAS is an important accountability partner for H&H,” said Julie Baker, Founder and Executive Director of Horses & Heroes Inc. “The required accreditation SOP’s have pushed H&H into a higher level of accountability and being prepared. The site visit, although not like a “white-glove” inspection of the Marine Corps barracks, was thorough and required intentional planning of safety measures, signage, and OSHA documentation.”

Baker continued, “The team of therapy horses at H&H have either been rescued from the slaughter pipeline or they were discarded by previous owners because of a physical injury or limitation(s). Several horses that have come to us have been starved, emotionally or physically abused, abandoned, or neglected. The path to healing for these horses required emotional and physical safety, time, and mutual respect. This healing process is vital and similar to the healing process for our human clients. Interestingly, clients connect with a horse that has a similar history, although we do not share the stories of the horses upfront; it is really beautiful to witness the mutual connection and healing of both horse and human. GFAS ensures we provide safe, consistent, and intentional husbandry and business practices and we are honored to be one of their newly accredited organizations.”

The GFAS Equine Accreditation Program is made possible by a generous grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® and the Kenneth Scott Charitable Trust.
