We help the community with outreach programs to help children develop compassion for rescue animals at an early age. Teaching our children to respect and protect even the smallest among us is one of the most important life lessons we can pass on. Children and animals are the most vulnerable members of society, with abuse on the rise for both groups. Our goal with this sanctuary is to give the unwanted a home and to teach children compassion. Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary Becomes First Farm Sanctuary Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries in Colorado

September 18, 2023 (Erie, CO) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary as of August 18, 2023.

Accreditation signifies that Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary meets GFAS’ rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education, outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize Luvin Arms as an exceptional organization.

“Luvin Arms has been an integral part of the sanctuary movement for many years, and we are thrilled to announce their Accreditation“ said Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director. “She continues, “Luvin Arms demonstrates a deep commitment to their residents, with perhaps one of the most intentional and dedicated enrichment and training (yes clicker training!) programs for their farmed animal friends, in addition to their provision of world-class animal care. The sanctuary truly embodies the guiding principle of Ahimsa, taking their compassion a step further by helping those in their community and around the world connect with animals and embrace nonviolence toward all living beings. In a world where farmed animals are so often treated violently, the lucky ones embraced by Luvin Arms have found themselves in true sanctuary. We couldn’t be happier to welcome them into the GFAS family.”

At the heart of Luvin Arms is a mission deeply rooted in compassion and education. The sanctuary has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the well-being of rescued farmed animals. “Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary provides exceptional lifelong social, emotional, and cognitive care to rescued farmed animals,” says Managing Director, Kelly Nix. “We aim to be a beacon of change, advocating for those still trapped in unfavorable conditions by sharing the touching stories of our residents. Our goal is to inspire, educate, and empower others to embrace a lifestyle that is both compassionate and sustainable.”

Tucked away in a serene environment, Luvin Arms serves not only as a safe haven for farmed animals but also as a place of learning and connection for the community. Over the years, thousands have visited the sanctuary, leaving with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the value of all living beings.

As the sanctuary continues to flourish, so do its ambitions. “We’re on the cusp of an exciting expansion of our educational program,” shares Kelly Nix. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between students and farmed animals, bringing Luvin Arms directly to schools. We believe in fostering connections with these farmed animals and instilling compassion toward all living beings.” Central to this vision is the principle of Ahimsa – a Sanskrit term meaning non-violence – promoting peace and respect for all life forms.

Achieving GFAS accreditation is a testament to the high standards and unwavering dedication of Luvin Arms. This accreditation is not just a badge of honor; it’s a recognition of the sanctuary’s commitment to providing the best possible environment for its residents, staff, and the wider community. For Luvin Arms, the GFAS accreditation amplifies its voice in advocating for the rights and welfare of farmed animal worldwide.

Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary remains steadfast in its mission, inviting everyone to be a part of this transformative journey towards a more compassionate world.

  • Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center in Democratic Republic of Congo is Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center in Democratic Republic of Congo is Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

September 7, 2023 (Phoenix, AZ) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, has awarded Accredited status to Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center as of September 5, 2023.

Accreditation means that Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center has met GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards        which are confirmed by a site visit, and that it adheres to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles. The Accredited status signifies that Lwiro Primates is a true sanctuary dedicated to the humane, responsible, and respectful care of its animals, and provides a clear and trusted means for the public and donors to recognize it as an exceptional organization.

Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center (LPRC) was founded in 2003 near Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It serves as a safe haven for orphaned primates (and other wildlife) rescued from the bushmeat and pet trade. LPRC’s core functions include rescuing and sheltering these animals, rehabilitating them for potential release into the wild, preserving genetic diversity in endangered species like chimpanzees, and educating and empowering the local community to support conservation efforts. LPRC plays a crucial role in protecting wildlife and promoting sustainable practices in the region.

“We are thrilled to have achieved GFAS accreditation,” said Itsaso Vélez del Burgo Guinea, LPRC’s Technical Director. “The accreditation process has strengthened us as a team and has helped us identify our weaknesses and improve them. This process encourages us to maintain high standards, ultimately benefiting the animals in our care. During the accreditation process, our team received guidance and recommendations from GFAS experts – special thanks to Jackie. This helped us improve our facilities, protocols, and overall operations based on the latest best practices in animal welfare.”

“We are proud to be accredited by GFAS. This accreditation signifies our unwavering commitment to maintaining high standards of animal care and welfare. It reflects the hard work and dedication we have put into ensuring the well-being of the animals under our care. We are honored to be recognized for our efforts and will continue to strive for excellence in animal welfare.”

“We are thrilled to announce the Accreditation of Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center,” said Jackie Bennett, GFAS Program Director, Africa and Asia. “It has been a pleasure to work with Itsaso and her team throughout this process. Their commitment to providing the best care possible to chimpanzees and other animals, many of whom are victims of poaching and wildlife trafficking, is beyond doubt. Lwiro Primates is also a demonstrated leader in the sanctuary community, always willing to share their experience and expertise with others.”

    About Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center

The Republic Democratic of Congo (DRC) is home to about 90% of the world’s eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii), but since the mid-1990s, these chimpanzees have experienced alarming population declines of up to 40% due to illegal hunting and habitat loss – the impact compounded by years of civil war, insecurity, and humanitarian crises.

Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center (LPRC) is first and foremost a primate sanctuary focused mainly on chimpanzees and monkeys – however it does also cater to other victims of wildlife crime (currently including parrots and tortoises). It was officially founded in 2003 by two Congolese institutions, the Centre de Recherches en Sciences Naturelles (CRSN) and the Institute Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN), to help alleviate the animal victims of civil war that resulted in both humanitarian and wildlife atrocities; and specifically, to create a permanent solution to the increasing number of orphaned apes confiscated around Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP). Strategically situated only 4 km away from KBNP, defined by the IUCN as the world’s 3rd most important site for the conservation of the Eastern Chimpanzee, makes Lwiro the ideal location for chimpanzee rehabilitation and local conservation education and outreach.

LPRC recognizes the importance of engaging with the local community. Conducting education and sensitization programs to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and the need to protect local wildlife. By empowering the community with knowledge and skills, LPRC helps reduce the pressure on wild habitats by promoting sustainable practices and discouraging illegal activities like poaching.

Help Us Welcome Newly Accredited On Golden Rescue to GFAS

July 11, 2023 (Birkenfeld, OR) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to On Golden Rescue (OGR) as of July 6, 2023.

On Golden Rescue achieved GFAS Accreditation, meeting criteria for providing humane and responsible care to equines. With dedication and commitment to demonstrating high levels of professionalism, OGR has achieved GFAS Accreditation. This certification signifies that OGR meets GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed equine care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and granters to recognize On Golden Rescue as an excellent organization.

“When we first were in the process of creating OGR”, Larry Boxman, Executive Director explained, “we wanted to make sure we were providing the highest quality care in the most wholesome and safest environment possible. To turn our vision into reality, we thoroughly examined many websites and spoke with representatives from other rescues and sanctuaries and discovered an extraordinary trend. The best-of the best were all GFAS Accredited or Verified. At that point, we knew for us to be the best, the GFAS standards would be our guiding principles.” He continued, “We studied the GFAS criteria and requirements, read through the sample documents and went to work. The GFAS staff have been incredible in every way. They provided guidance, suggestions and encouragement in the most professional manner possible. Obtaining GFAS Accreditation has been our goal since the inception of OGR in early 2022 and we are extremely proud to be associated with such a prestigious organization.”

Mr Boxman went on to say, “Now that we are GFAS Accredited, we know we fall into a class that has more to prove every day, rather than less. That is, Accreditation is not justification to rest on that laurel, but to prove at all times that such recognition is warranted. Accreditation not only indicates that we have met the highest standards, it indicates our commitment to continue to meet new standards and excel in ways not yet adopted into standards. After all, these animals deserve the best!”

“On Golden Rescue was a joy to work with through the certification process.”, said Traci Hanson, GFAS Program Director – Equine, “Larry and his team were, and continue to be deeply dedicated to providing the best standard of care for the animals, and growth and transparency of the organization.”

    About On Golden Rescue
In the rural countryside of the coastal range of Oregon, On Golden Rescue (OGR) has created a forever sanctuary and rehabilitation center for equines and goats.  Our residents come from varied situations, some from neglected or abused backgrounds, others that are simply old and compromised and no longer “of value” to the owner while others are homeless.  “No more bad days” is our credo as our residents get to live the rest of their lives in lush surroundings with top notch care and kindness. The genuine love and compassion provided by OGR to each individual resident is palpable. We have seen miracles happen in how well our rescues respond with improvements in health, behavior and happier attitudes!

Our mission is multi-faceted. Along with rescue, rehabilitate and retirement, our strategic plan also includes a community education and outreach program. By collaborating with county and state agencies, veterinarians and other non-profit organizations, OGR helps to identify situations where equines and other large animals may be in circumstances with owners where they need temporary support. Whether it be proper nutrition, farrier or veterinary care, OGR will assess and deliver needed services with the intent of the animal(s) to remain in place if it is deemed a safe and adequate. Through our Education and Outreach program, our goal is to keep animals and their people together in their current homes by helping to improve their health, safety and well-being. The people drawn to TCTC are seeking sanctuary and peace themselves, wanting only to care for and ensure optimum welfare for each horse living here. We have always cared for TCTC’s horses as part of our family. We’d developed plans and protocols establishing their security, structure and long-term management prioritizing their medical, physical, mental and emotional health FIRST. Being volunteer-powered requires substantial signage, instruction, coaching and manuals so everyone maintains the health and safety of the horses, themselves and each other. Many of our volunteers, especially our youth leaders, have little, if any, prior horse experience and they become a vital force in no time, as they have the purest intentions. Without GFAS’s incredibly detailed requirements, I would not have realized what we WERE. Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary in England is Verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

March 23, 2023 (Ascot, Berkshire, UK) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, has awarded Verified status to Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary as of March 13, 2023.

Verification means that Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary has met the criteria of a true sanctuary and is providing humane and responsible care to its animals. To become verified, an organization must meet GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a site visit. They must also adhere to a demanding set of ethical and operational principles. The Verification status provides a clear and trusted means for the public and donors to recognize Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary as an exceptional organization.

“We are delighted to announce the Verification of Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary,” said Jackie Bennett, GFAS Program Director, Africa, and Asia. “This is a true sanctuary, dedicated to providing a safe haven, rehabilitative care, and a permanent home to primates in need, many of whom have suffered physical and psychological trauma from past lives of exploitation and neglect. Those lives are behind them now. Throughout this Verification process, Lakeview has demonstrated its commitment to meet high standards and to continue its work to strengthen and sustain its organization for now and the years to come.”

Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary, currently home to 29 primates including macaques and ring-tailed lemurs, has rescued more than 50 monkeys since its founding in 2007. These animals, arriving from the primate pet trade, laboratories, circuses, and zoos, now live within the sanctuary’s 10 wooded acres. In keeping with its belief that the animals in their care have the right to peace and tranquility and time to be with their own kind, Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary is not open to the public.

“For over 40 years we have worked with primates, and our dream and ambition during this time was to create a true sanctuary where primates could live out their remaining years, away from stress, fear, and abuse. This dream came to fruition after our search to find the ideal location was realized and the creation of our charity, founded in 2007,” said co-founders Jim and Sharon Shaw. “We have strived throughout this time to do the best for our primates and part of this process included, in 2011, becoming one of the inaugural partners in the European Alliance of Rescue Centres and Sanctuaries (EARS). We wholeheartedly support the ethos of collaboration between organisations to promote the highest welfare standards for captive animals in sanctuaries and rescue centres within Europe. By gaining GFAS verification status, it shows that we are continually striving to improve the lives of our primates, and we look forward to continuing this process for our current residents and any we may have the honour of providing a home for in the future.”

    About Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary

Monkeys and lemurs in distress are rescued, re-homed, and rehabilitated at Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary, with care, patience, and kindness. We try to help them recover from the psychological and physical trauma they have suffered over the years. Some of our primates have endured terrible suffering for over 20 years, having been deprived of their basic needs of companionship, the correct nutrition and veterinary care, leaving them needing round the clock attention. To rescue these beautiful creatures and nurse them back to physical and mental health, is our prime focus. Our mission is to:

    • Rescue: We travel the country in response to phone calls from other rescue organisations and individuals to reach monkeys in distress.
    • Re-home: Once a monkey has been rescued, he is brought back to Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary where he can live with his own kind.
    • Rehabilitate: Monkeys suffer trauma and distress as much as we humans do. To rehabilitate these wonderful creatures takes time, patience, and kindness, all found at Lakeview.

Our team of staff, volunteers, equine facilitators, and board members work hard to ensure we uphold these standards and appreciate GFAS for your guidance and assistance to make it this far!  It is our goal to continue this crucial work and make an even larger impact in our community and the world, for horses and humans. About Dove Creek Equine Rescue
Dove Creek Equine Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit, dedicated to making a difference in the unwanted horse population since 2012. DCER’s mission statement is to restore the dignity, purpose, and wholeness of unwanted horses who need a second chance in life and humans who need healing and direction by providing compassionate care, connection, and education.  We honor and value the horse/human bond and offer various opportunities to nurture that bond through our Volunteer and Equine Assisted Learning and Coaching programs. Since 2012, we have re-homed 75 percent of the 250 + horses received while maintaining the other 25 percent that are not adoptable in our sanctuary, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.   By only rehoming horses that we feel have had time to fully rehabilitate we ensure a successful adoption. An average of 30 horses at Dove Creek enjoy 500 acres of grassy plains where they roam in a “herd” environment, setting the stage for the continued healing of their minds and bodies. It is this unparalleled environment and painstaking care provided by our staff and volunteer team that enable us to successfully rehabilitate and rehome these wonderful majestic creatures. For more information, visit https://www.dovecreekequinerescue.org/.
