Dorset Equine Rescue is the First Equine Rescue Organization in Vermont to be Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

October 26, 2021 (East Dorset, VT) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries and rescue organizations, awarded Accredited status to Dorset Equine Rescue of October 25, 2021.

Accreditation signifies that Dorset Equine Rescue meets GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed equine care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize Dorset Equine Rescue as an exceptional organization.

“We are very proud to announce the Accreditation of Dorset Equine Rescue,” said Daryl Tropea, Ph.D., GFAS Program Director-Equine. “This organization is dedicated to providing a safe environment for equines that have encountered many difficulties and are greatly in need of a soft landing.  Going forward, this organization will focus their efforts toward helping horse owners at risk of surrendering their horses by providing short term support such as a new Vermont Hay bank. Dorset Equine Rescue’s solid business plans and strategic vision ensure they will be a leader in the state of Vermont for years to come.”

“The Dorset Equine Rescue is truly honored to be accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries,” said Jen Straub, President of Dorset Equine Rescue. “Since 2012, in our mission to rescue and rehabilitate horses in need we have strived to provide the highest quality of care to our rescue horses and to always conduct The Dorset Equine Rescue at the highest levels of transparency and accountability.”

She continued, “This accreditation is not only an exceptional honor, but also a confirmation to our efforts to date and a milestone that we are proud to reach. As we look to the future, it is my hope that we may one day look back to this milestone and see how far we have come since, in the measure of additional horses rescued and in the expansion of our Vermont Hay Bank which was established this year to provide temporary assistance to horse owners going through hardship.”

The GFAS Equine Accreditation Program is made possible by a generous grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® and the Kenneth Scott Charitable Trust.

About Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries
Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the sole purpose of strengthening and supporting the work of animal sanctuaries, rescues, and rehabilitation centers worldwide. The goal of GFAS in working with and assisting these animal care facilities is to ensure they are supported, honored, recognized and rewarded for meeting important criteria in providing care to the animals in residence. GFAS was founded in 2007 by animal protection leaders from a number of different organizations in response to virtually unchecked and often hidden exploitation of animals for human entertainment and financial profit. The GFAS Board of Directors guides the organization’s work in a collaborative manner. While the board includes those in top leadership at The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and American Anti-Vivisection Society, all board members serve as individuals dedicated to animal sanctuaries. www.sanctuaryfederation.org.

    About Dorset Equine Rescue
The Dorset Equine Rescue is an approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in the beautiful Green Mountains of Dorset, Vermont. We are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of neglected, abused and slaughter bound horses. Horses come to us from a variety of situations, including many from owner surrenders. Our organization gets contacted regularly by people who wish to surrender their horses to us for many different reasons. In some cases, there has been a loss of job, serious illness, divorce, foreclosure, or death of an owner. Due to lack of funds and space, we are forced to focus on the ones who are in the direst situation.

We are happy when we can help not only the horses in these tough situations, but also the people who have fallen on hard times and have no other option for their horses. By intervening, we prevent the horses from ending up in a worse situation or going to auction which would put them at a high risk of shipping to slaughter. We also receive horses through law enforcement who seize animals due to severe neglect. For more information, please visit http://www.dorsetequinerescue.org/.

About Oscar’s Place Donkey Adoption Center and Sanctuary
Oscar’s Place is committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of donkeys. When an animal suffers because humans are unkind, Oscar’s Place steps in. While we’re just a team of everyday individuals, we deeply care for and are committed to providing a safe haven for farm animals in need. Our current focus is on donkeys because the world’s donkey population is being decimated. Not by disease, global warming, or predators. But because there is a high demand for donkey hides in the creation of a traditional Chinese medicine. Donkeys are some of the most loving and trusting creatures on Earth. They deserve better than to be abused, crowded into horrifying transport containers, and shipped off to slaughter factories. We love animals, and quite frankly, we need to team up with other people who also care about what happens to these beautiful creatures. Again, we’re not special, but our team consists of caring employees, volunteers, veterinarians, and farriers – all with a singular objective: to help donkeys recover physically, mentally, and emotionally. Every person on-site is committed to hands-on interaction with every donkey, every day. Loving them. Calming them. Healing them. We want to show them that humans can be good. In addition to providing excellent care to the horses, TRF is committed to management best practices and thoughtful strategic planning ensuring sustainability for future years.”

“We are so grateful to GFAS for working side by side with the TRF to achieve our goal of having all TRF farms accredited and ensuring that we are meeting the highest standards of care and best practices” said Pat Stickney, Executive Director. “We are committed to providing a happy, safe and healthy environment for the nearly 500 Thoroughbreds under our care”.

The GFAS Standards of Excellence were initially developed and reviewed with the input of animal services officers, non-profit professionals, sanctuary managers, animal protection advocates, and veterinarians utilizing existing standards from outstanding sanctuaries as a starting framework and refined/expanded upon based on knowledge and expertise of contributors.

  • Kentucky Equine Adoption Center in Nicholasville, KY, is Now Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

Kentucky Equine Adoption Center in Nicholasville, KY, is Now Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

May 18, 2021 (Nicholasville, KY)- The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to Kentucky Equine Adoption Center (KyEAC) aka Kentucky Equine Humane Center as of April 23, 2021.

Kentucky Equine Adoption Center first achieved GFAS Verification in December 2014, meeting criteria for providing humane and responsible care to equines. With dedication and commitment to demonstrating high levels of professionalism, Kentucky Equine Adoption Center has now achieved Accredited status. Accreditation signifies that KyEAC meets GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed equine care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize Kentucky Equine Adoption Center as an exceptional organization.

“We are very proud to announce the transition from Verified to Accredited status for Kentucky Equine Adoption Center,” said Daryl Tropea, Ph.D., GFAS Program Director-Equine. “In addition to providing quality rehabilitation and rehoming services to all breeds of equines, this organization has developed innovative educational and therapeutic programs as well. In addition to their very successful adoption program, KyEAC has developed a new program called “Support a Special Horse” (SASH) for companion equines whose riding days are over. This is a program for people who want to learn and play with horses but not ride, providing enrichment opportunities for horses and humans. KyEAC’s commitment to innovative programs and best practices in business and financial management ensures success and sustainability for years to come.”

We are very pleased to be moved up from Verified to Accredited with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries,” said Karen Gustin, Executive Director of Kentucky Equine Adoption Center. “This worldwide nonprofit promotes best husbandry, rehabilitation, adoption, and general care practices for domestic and wild animals.  We are proud to be a part of this organization that does so much for animals!”

The GFAS Equine Accreditation Program is made possible by a generous grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® and the Kenneth Scott Charitable Trust.

  • New Freedom Farm of Buchanan, Virginia is Accredited Organization by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

New Freedom Farm of Buchanan, Virginia is Accredited Organization by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

April 27, 2021, (Buchanan, VA) – The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries and rescue organizations, awarded Accredited status to New Freedom Farm as of April 20, 2021.

Accreditation signifies that New Freedom Farm meets GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed equine care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize New Freedom Farm as an exceptional organization.

“We are very proud to announce the Accreditation of New Freedom Farm,” said Daryl Tropea, Ph.D., GFAS Program Director-Equine. “This organization is dedicated to providing a safe and healthy environment for Veterans, First Responders, and in-need equines, particularly Mustangs, to support opportunities for both humans and horses to work through anxiety and trauma. This worthy organization also offers unique services such as their Honor Guard, giving back to the community for their military service and sacrifices.”

“We are honored to announce New Freedom Farm is the first Veteran and Mustang organization in history to receive the prestigious Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries Accreditation,” declared Lois Fritz, Executive Director and Founder of New Freedom Farm. She continued, “I literally started the process of applying for the GFAS accreditation on June 26, 2018, it became overwhelming, and I set it aside. On June 17, 2020 we had a flash flood, and an advisor to our board Gillian Deegan suggested I have a policy and procedure in place for disaster situations.  It was then when I decided I wanted to follow the gold standards of care for animals.  I wanted to be sure that not only our equine residents but also New Freedom Farm as an organization would enjoy the benefits of being guided by the highest standards. An accreditation from the GFAS means that we meet or exceed the rigorous peer-reviewed standards of excellence they set forth.   I would like to thank Daryl Tropea from GFAS, Gillian Deegan, advisor to the board, the board of New Freedom Farm, the veterans, volunteers, and supporters of New Freedom Farm for all of the hard work that went into achieving this accreditation.   Although we have reached our goal of Accreditation, we will continue to develop our facility, programs, and protocols to reach ever higher in our mission to heal our American Icons: the wild mustangs.”

The GFAS Equine Accreditation Program is made possible by a generous grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® and the Kenneth Scott Charitable Trust.

    About New Freedom Farm
New Freedom Farm is a non-profit community farm located in Buchanan, Virginia. We exist to aid veterans with PTSD, Substance Abuse, and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) by using the therapeutic activity of interacting with our equines, farming, and peer-to-peer support.
